Since its debut in the US in 2014, 4DX—the transformation of moviegoing into a thrill ride—has been mainly associated with action films. For understandable reasons; the intense car chases of a Fast & Furious installment or the repetitive combat scenes of an Avatar series translate smoothly to the moving seats, scent devices, and wind/water sprayers of this format, which feels more like a theme park attraction than traditional cinema.

As a longtime enthusiast of turbulence-style seat motion, I believed the immersive delights of 4DX—the second most popular premium large format in the US, after Imax—peaked in summer 2024 with the release of Twisters, a decent action movie about tornadoes that became an outstanding experience when shaken in one's seat with actual wind and rain. However, a recent unexpected contender is once again expanding the boundaries of 4DX, fully leveraging the format's ability to amplify the sensory pleasures of cinema.
